Overview

This article provides instructions for faculty members on how to launch their academic programs. The guidelines outlined here are designed to streamline the program launch process and ensure consistency across departments. Faculty should refer to these instructions when initiating new programs or re-launching existing ones.

Procedure

IntelliJ IDEA Community

  • When opening IntelliJ IDEA Community, the students will be given a few prompts.  The first message is to accept the IntelliJ IDEA User Agreement. 
  • Select the checkbox “I confirm that I have read and accept the terms of this User Agreement”.  Then click continue.

The second message is in reference to sharing anonymous data, select “Don’t Send”.

  • Plugins within IntelliJ IDEA Community are installed based on the profile and are not able to be installed for all users. 
  • If a student needs a plugin for a class, they can click on the “Plugins” option on the left pane and select the plugin. 
  • For example, when the student clicks on the “Plugins" option, the “JetBrains Academy” plugin will be listed in the center pane.  They can also search for a plugin using the search box. 
  • Once they select their desired plugin, they can click install. 
  • The JetBrains Academy plugin takes approximately 1 minute to install.

PyCharm Community

  • If students launch IntelliJ IDEA Community prior to launching PyCharm Community, they will be presented with the window below. 
  • If there are settings that were set up in IntelliJ Community that need to be imported into PyCharm they can click on the “IntelliJ IDEA Community 2024.1” option and follow the prompts. 
  • If there are no settings to import the student can just click on “Skip Import”.

  • If PyCharm is launched before IntelliJ IDEA Community, they will have the same prompts that were presented in the example described above with IntelliJ IDEA Community.
  •   The first message is to accept the PyCharm User Agreement.

Python

  • If a student logs into the computer as their own account and not using the generic lab account, the Python Packages will not be installed. 
  • The student can double click on the desktop shortcut “Python Package Install”; this script will install all the necessary Python packages. 
  • The script will take about 2 minutes to run.
