Question: Who is eligible for the tuition waiver?

Answer: Maryland residents who are out of the workforce due to a total and permanent disability as defined by the Social Security Act, Railroad Retirement Act, or the Office of Personnel Management (for former federal employees).

Question: Does receiving Social Security benefits automatically qualify me?

Answer: Not necessarily. Individuals receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) as a dependent or survivor of a disabled beneficiary do not qualify for the waiver.

Question: What steps do I need to take to apply for the waiver?

Answer: To apply for the tuition waiver, follow these steps:

  • Complete the FAFSA and include CCBC’s school code (002063).
  • Obtain a Social Security Administration (SSA) Benefit Verification letter online or use the most recent benefits letter received by mail.
  • Submit the benefits letter via email to the Registrar’s Office.
Question: What courses does the waiver apply to?

Answer: The waiver applies to credit courses as long as the class has at least 10 regularly enrolled students. It does not cover continuing education (non-credit) courses.

Question: What does the waiver cover?

Answer: The waiver only covers tuition for up to 12 credit hours per semester. However, it is only applied after all grants and scholarships have been used. It does not cover fees.

Question: Can the waiver be used in combination with other financial aid?

Answer: Yes, but any awarded grants and scholarships will be used first to pay for tuition. The waiver will only be applied if those funds do not cover the full tuition cost. Federal loans and work-study funds do not affect the waiver.
